Delivering Intelligent Wireless Solutions

The Project

In today’s rapidly evolving infrastructure landscape, many critical industries are embracing the game-changing benefits of robust wireless technology. From real-time remote monitoring to predictive maintenance, sectors across the UK are leveraging data collection and wireless networks to address complex challenges with greater efficiency, safety and sustainability.

The combination of real-time IoT sensing, computer vision and wireless technology can enable the detection and monitoring of a vast array of environmental and geotechnical factors, such as air quality, noise levels and flood risk as well as other ground conditions, including potentially critical earth movements. In addition, with powerful analytics, actionable insights can be provided to address many challenges as efficiently as possible while significantly reducing the need for on-site visits, mitigating ecological impact and reducing operational carbon footprint.

The potential is huge for these cutting-edge technologies to deliver real-world benefits across various sectors such as rail, utilities, construction and energy. When the Clarke Connect team recently collaborated with Network Rail on the Hague Bar embankment project, we demonstrated our innovative solutions, technology knowledge, and expertise to deliver a transformative and comprehensive solution enabling Network Rail to seamlessly manage operational and environmental site activity.

Project Background

During the Future of Rail 2024 event, organised by one of the UK’s leading rail infrastructure companies, QTS, at their test track facility, we showcased IoT sensing, AI-assisted computer vision, and wireless networking, capturing the interest of attending Network Rail stakeholders. Soon after, Network Rail asked us to propose a site monitoring solution related to an urgent embankment remediation project at Hague Bar, New Mills.

The embankment supports a vital section of the rail track. Following emergency investigations, Network Rail identified the risk of a 50,000-tonne earth mass slipping into the River Goyt below, necessitating urgent civil work to stabilise the embankment.

Project Challenges and Solutions

Like many construction infrastructure developments, the project faced several key challenges:

  • Remote Location: Limited access to reliable power sources and communications infrastructure.
  • Environmental Impact: Concerns around noise levels, air quality, and general disruption to the local community and track-side neighbours during a 24/7 construction operation.
  • Safety and Security Risks: Busy construction site with multiple assets and working personnel.

Providing an end-to-end solution, we utilised our extensive supply chain network, selecting and integrating best-in-class components from industry-leading partners to create an optimised solution for specific use cases.

Our solution tackled the challenges of the Hague Bar project and included the following:

  • Operational Efficiency and Safety: The combination of remote environmental monitoring, AI-driven site surveillance, and real-time data analytics allowed Network Rail to reduce site risks and make informed decisions quickly.
  • Community and Environmental Impact: Real-time noise and air quality monitoring ensured that the project met environmental standards, minimising disruption and providing improved resident relationships.
  • Carbon Footprint Reduction: Our remote monitoring system decreased the need for specific on-site personnel, reducing travel and aligning with Network Rail’s broader sustainability goals.

Our network technology and data analytics expertise provided Network Rail with a comprehensive suite of systems and technology. Our design solution provided a new approach to site monitoring, where remote analysis and real-time information were always available to project stakeholders.

Remote Environmental Monitoring

The deployment of IoT sensors to measure noise levels and air quality at strategic points across the site proved to be a game-changing facility. These sensors, connected via a hybrid LoRaWAN and 4G wireless network, transmit real-time data to a secure dashboard accessible to the Network Rail project team, significantly improving site monitoring and information access. The setup also facilitated sending notifications and real-time alerts to project stakeholders.

Enhanced Site Safety and Security

In addition to environmental data, we integrated remote cameras with AI capabilities to monitor the site for potential personnel and asset risks while meeting privacy and data protection requirements. By its very nature, this proactive approach helped reduce health and safety incidents and provided 24/7 surveillance, which also included invaluable insights into site traffic movements. The system facility also provided visual context to the environmental data being monitored and collected in real-time.

  • Health and Safety Monitoring: Virtual safety zones were employed to monitor worker compliance with PPE protocols, ensuring safe working conditions at all times.
  • Trespass, Vandalism, Anti-Social Behaviour and Theft Detection: The system detected unauthorised access in real-time, providing an added layer of security.
  • Logistics Movements and People Counting: Virtual trip lines and zones were used to track site traffic activity while demonstrating further use case capabilities.

All collected real-time data was processed using AI and machine learning algorithms, visualised through an easy-to-use online analytics platform, providing Network Rail with actionable insights and the ability to react quickly, efficiently and effectively.

John O’Rourke, Clarke Connect’s Business Development Manager, commented on the project:

“Our objective at Hague Bar was to deliver an innovative, cost-effective solution for Network Rail. However, what we’ve developed goes far beyond a single-site solution and is now a sustainable environmental and situation awareness model applicable to many other Network Rail sites. Wireless technology, IoT sensors, and AI-driven systems are helping many industries improve efficiency, safety, budget management, and environmental goals while safeguarding communities – all supported with our expertise.”

From a client perspective, Mark Evans BEng (Hons) CEng FICE, Network Rail Senior Programme Manager (Civils) commented:

“The technology solution from the Clarke Connect team has provided tangible value to our project operations. The data monitoring and intelligence, in real-time, allows us to protect people, assets and, of course, the environment during construction. Additionally, from a local community perspective, we have another layer to ensure we have systems to enhance our approach and reputation as a responsible contractor. I thank the team for their solution, approach and relationship management during this project.”
